FAQ

A. Booking & Fees

Q1. How do I book an assessment?

To proceed, you must first become a Let's Talk ADHD member, then register by providing your WhatsApp number. Staff from THMC Mental Health and Innovation Service will then contact you.

Q2. How much is the assessment, and what's included?

After Let’s Talk ADHD verifies your membership and confirms the referral, the discounted fee is HK$4,500. Pay a HK$200 booking fee when you book, and the HK$4,300 balance on the assessment day. It includes: a clinical assessment by a specialist psychiatrist, a questionnaire assessment, a functional near-infrared brain scan (fNIRS), a computer test, plus the report and a doctor's in-person explanation of it.

Q3. How long does the whole process take?

It depends on your appointment day. On a full Friday or Saturday morning/early afternoon, the specialist is on site; the whole process takes about 2 hours and you receive the report immediately. From Monday to Thursday, the doctor may not be on site; you first complete a questionnaire and 2 objective tests (about 1.5 hours), and the doctor may arrange to meet you on Friday/Saturday to explain the results (about 30 minutes).

B. Assessment Features & Scientific Basis

Q4. How is this different from the standard ADHD assessment at other centres?

Most centres rely on a clinical interview only, where a psychiatrist decides based on criteria such as DSM-5. Here, besides the clinical assessment, a diagnosis also requires at least one objective test (such as the infrared brain scan or computer test) to fall within the ADHD range. If all objective tests are normal, you may have ADHD symptoms but your brain function and coordination are within the normal range. This follows the traditional medical model — just as diabetes needs a blood test and heart disease an ECG, a clinical diagnosis should be supported by objective tests.

Q5. Are there any side effects from the infrared brain scan?

It is very safe, has no side effects, and involves no radiation. You simply sit and wear a headband during the scan; it causes no pain, headache, dizziness, drowsiness or visual disturbance.

Q6. What is the scientific basis of this assessment?

It is based on several research papers from the National University of Singapore (NUS), covering the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to distinguish adult ADHD and diagnostic studies combining clinical and multimodal neuroimaging. Contact the centre for details.

Q7. Besides THMC, does any other institution offer the same assessment?

Yes. The Institute of Health Innovation and Technology, NUS, also offers the exact same ADHD assessment.

Q8. Where can I find more information about this assessment?

Visit the THMC website: https://www.thmcpsychiatry.com/

C. Who It's For

Q9. Can this assessment also assess autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?

The assessment focuses mainly on ADHD. If you have concerns about ASD, please discuss them further with our specialist psychiatrist during the consultation.

Q10. I'm 65 and suspect I have ADHD — can I be assessed?

The upper age limit for this ADHD assessment is 59. If you are 60 or above, we recommend booking our dementia assessment instead.

Q11. Can I bring my 4-year-old child for an ADHD assessment?

Our children's ADHD assessment is for ages 7 and above.

Q12. I'm currently taking ADHD medication — will it affect the results?

We recommend pausing your medication on the assessment day to reduce its impact on the results.

D. Report & Follow-up

Q13. What's the next step if I'm diagnosed with ADHD?

The specialist will discuss medication and psychotherapy options with you; THMC provides both. You can also contact Let's Talk ADHD for ADHD Coaching.

Q14. I'm taking an overseas public exam (e.g. GCE A-Level), entering university, or sitting a professional exam — can the report help me apply for special accommodation?

Yes. The doctor can write a recommendation letter or a more detailed report based on your needs. Please note that issuing a letter or additional report incurs an extra fee.

Q15. Can I use the diagnosis for legal purposes (e.g. a traffic accident caused by inattention) in court?

Yes. If our assessment certifies that you have ADHD, your lawyer can discuss further with our specialist psychiatrist. Note that an additional fee applies due to the extra time and work required for legal procedures.

Q16. Will my report be uploaded to eHealth (Hong Kong's Electronic Health Record Sharing System)?

No. Your report will never be uploaded to eHealth or the Electronic Health Record Sharing System. You'll receive a hard copy of the report after the assessment.

Q17. I'm from overseas and plan to bring the report back home — do you offer assessments for me?

Yes. Our Hong Kong and Singapore centres have served clients from Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, the UK, Vietnam and Singapore, who then brought their reports back to their home countries.
