Medication:

Medication can help improve the imbalance of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, thereby improving control over impulsivity, hyperactivity, and attention.

In Hong Kong, commonly used drugs are divided into two categories:

Central nervous system stimulant - Methylphenidate

There are three formulations of methylphenidate, including:

- Ritalin- short-acting (drug effect is about 4 hours)

- Ritalin LA- long-acting (drug effect is about 8 hours)

- Concentrate (approximately 12 hours of efficacy)

Non-stimulant -

Atomoxetine and Clonidine

This type of medication is usually used in children who do not respond to central nervous system stimulants or have too many side effects from them.

Patients with ADHD taking medication are like nearsighted people wearing glasses. During the period of medication efficacy, patients can concentrate, improve their thinking and ability to work, and good learning habits and skills can be retained or maintained for a longer period of time.
